The Khuen-Belasi family are an aristocratic family of long standing, originally from Tyrol and later, from the 16th century onwards, seated in Lower Austria, Bohemia, Hungary and Croatia.
Family records date back to the year 1111 with the first written reference to a certain Egon von Tramin. The ancestral family name is said to have found its roots in his great grandson, whose bravery earned him the name of “Kühne” - “The Bold One.”
A grandson, Arnoldus, married Elisabeth von Belasi, the last of her family line; in 1368, the Belasi castle and dominion passed to the Khuen family who, ever since, have been known as the Khuen-Belasi family.
The ancestral family of the Counts Khuen-Belasi counted many officers in the Hapsburg Monarch, and hold both low and high positions in the Empire as officials and as priests.
From around 1870 onwards, Englar Castle was primarily inhabited as a summer residence.

“After the Second World War, the castle was neglected to a considerable extent. In 1955 my father Ernst took over the castle and farm from his uncle, Bruno, who remained childless throughout his life, from 1957 onwards, together with my mother, he carried out major renovation works and ploughed immense effort into breathing new life into the castle,” says Count Johannes Graf Khuen-Belasi.

Since then, our family have, once again, lived in the castle year-round, and it is now open to our hotel guests from spring through to autumn.
